Comedy is a staple in the modern Cebuano culture, and one of the most prolific genres of jokes in Cebu — and the Philippines in general — is the ‘Hugot Line.’ Hugot literally means to “pull out,” as in to pull out a feeling or experience from within a person’s mind. These feelings that are ‘pulled out’ from reading/hearing the hugot line come from a person’s experience with love and heartbreak. Hence, hugot lines are intended to evoke sympathy and to express serious emotions comically.
Here are a few cheesy hugot lines for you to enjoy. To understand the following, ask a Filipino friend to explain it to you!
“Ako, okay ra nako mutapad sa aircon or ni crush… Parehas ra bitaw sila’g bugnaw.”
“Di man unta daot imong mata, pero nganong dili gihapon ka kakita sa akong worth?”
“Kung makauyab ko, akong itawag niya kay ‘Probinsyano’ aron magdugay mi.”
“Sa una bata pa, piso ra’y pangayuon. Karon na dako na, second chance na.”
Grado gukda, dili siya.
“Ikaw ang gipili… Gipiling biyaan”
“Gwapo kaayo ka katong pag baby nimo, pero mas ni gwapo ka karon na baby na tika”
“Ayaw siya himua’g kalibutan nga kabalo ka na tao ra na”
“Sa kapaspas nako mureply, typing palang ka, type na tika.”
“Puro sila iOS 13, pero para sa akin, ikaw lang iOS na”
“Ang curfew kutob ra 10. Pero kamo, kutob ra friends.”
“Crush, nganong sige ka’g HAHA-react sa akong posts? Do you wanna HAHAHAve me?”
