International Week: Quarantine Edition

International Week: Quarantine Edition

As a yearly tradition at CIS, it is time that we celebrate the amazing variety of nationalities and representation we have at our school. Even if we are currently not in an ideal situation to celebrate, the CIS Dragons are still going to find a spectacular way to show pride for our nations!

Do you miss the food served during International Fair Day? Don’t worry, because CIS students have prepared a few cooking tutorial videos for you to follow. We highly recommend watching these cooking videos as these students found the time and effort to make these for you.

There are four different cooking videos on recipes from different countries:

The first one we have is So-tteok and Tuna Kimbap from Korea made by Jun, Duane, and Dominic. These small delectable classics can be found anywhere from Myeong Dong’s streets to your lunch box for a snack.

So-tteok is a simple dish composed of rice cakes and juicy Korean Vienna sausages. These are skewered then fried, topped off with a thick, sweet, and spicy sauce that is sure to get you salivating just from looking at it.

If you are looking for something on the healthier side, then try making their Tuna Kimbap. Tuna Kimbap is a roll consisting of rice, an assortment of veggies, crabstick, and tuna mayo. The best part about this dish is that you can put in anything you want!

Up next we have the Mango Float of the Philippines. Mango Float is a classic childhood staple of any Filipino kid, and Bianca and Deandra have you covered!

It is a nice cool and creamy treat that can cool you down on those harsh sunny days in the Philippines. The base components of this sweet treat are mango, cream, and graham crackers. Easy right?

Meanwhile, Daigo and Sean have created a tutorial on how to make the Onigiri, or the Rice Ball of Japan. It is simple, delicious, and has immense room for culinary creativity.

Find all of their cooking tutorials here.

Since we are unable to visit and prepare the usual International Fair booths where the school community can eat, play and enjoy the different cultures, CIS will be bringing the booths to you virtually.  You can look forward to visiting the booths and participating in the activities on International Fair Day itself—which is tomorrow!

We also recommend looking into each of the represented countries, especially the countries that you want or planned to travel to. These student-prepared sites can give you a feel of what it is like to be in another country and experience its culture.

The sites feature different aspects of culture such as music, language, food, tradition, and many more!

Students have also prepared multiple asynchronous story readings in different languages for you to tune into. We have childrens’ stories in Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, and Tagalog.

We recommend watching the childrens’ story, “Ang Kuneho at Pagong” by Justin.

This is one of the many known fables not only in Tagalog but also in English. This is the story of the Tortoise and the Hare, and the narration is well-dictated and easy to follow. Now, you can learn one of your classic childhood stories in a new language!

For those of you who enjoy art: Luna, Jodi, and Sofia have prepared art activities that will blow your minds away and give you something fun to do with very simple materials.

One of our personal favorites is the cutting art tutorial by Luna.

This technique makes use of negative space to create silhouette-like art out of black paper. It can be as intricate or as complex as you want it to be. Luna provides a great tutorial, and these simple basic steps can be applied to much more difficult drawings.

One can truly see and appreciate the complex cuts needed in order to complete this type of art.  We definitely recommend this activity if you are bored during this quarantine and are looking to impress someone.

Thank you for reading our article and we hope you indulge in all of these activities. The students have put in a lot of work throughout the week in order to create asynchronous activities that promote a deeper sense of appreciation for the variety of cultures represented in our school.

We hope you stay tuned for our next article!

Goodbye! 안녕! Adios! さようなら! Paalam!
