Essence: Interviews with IB Art Students

Essence: Interviews with IB Art Students

During February 8th to the 22nd, CIS held its annual G11/12 Art Exhibit, displaying the wonderful talents of its students. Undoubtedly, all of the artworks were fantastic and each had deeper intentions underneath for the audience to understand. Here are some questions we asked the student artists on their artworks:

What inspired you to create your artwork?

Victoria B. (G11)

  • I was inspired to make this artwork as I thought about the idea of “home”. The idea of home is something that is universally felt as unique to each individually. Though there probably is the commonality of getting that warm and secure feeling, the idea of home is finding comfort inc whoever, whatever, and however.

Hyein K. (G11)

  • For my artwork “Nostalgia”, it was my nostalgia that personally inspired me. I thought of my nostalgia for the beach when I was young. The sunset there was particularly beautiful and stuck in my memories for years, making it my nostalgia. The sunset was probably not as colorful with strong colors as the sunset I portrayed in my artwork; however, as time passes by, it is difficult to remember the exact image. Therefore, we begin to adorn the memory instead and make it more beautiful in our heads.

Marianne G. (G11)

  • The inspiration for my painting, “Rainy Ride”, came from a snapshot I took while biking to school. I watched as they persevered and encouraged one another to complete their task. Oddly, I also found it funny because of the contrast between the pair riding bicycles and the background image of a motorcycle shop. If they had the means, how much easier things would be. Together, they overcame the inclement weather and the distance. Just by seeing them, I realized that anything is conquerable with hard work and determination.

What were the challenges that you faced during the process of creating your artwork?

Victoria J. (G12)

  • One of the challenges I encountered in the process was forming the composition of the artwork at the beginning of designing it. I had to experiment on different compositions to find out which one would make the artwork look best and unique.

Victoria B. (G11)

  • During the process of making this artwork, I honestly found that it was very hard to actually get started on the artwork. Once I started, I think the main challenge was to create a composition with a balance in color and texture.

Chewon Y. (G12)

  • My challenge when making the artwork was on the medium of the works themselves. When painting with water color and acrylic, both of the materials were difficult to work with because when I added one layer of the painting, I had to dry it to work on it again, so it took away a lot of my time in the process.

Hyein K. (G11)

  • Honestly, the biggest challenge was picking the colors to use for the artwork. It took many experiments to find out which colors were best to express my idea within the artwork.

Marianne G. (G11)

  • The biggest challenge for me was figuring out how to manipulate the colors to achieve the vibe I want for my artwork. The original reference picture had warm colors as it was sunny but I wanted to push the element of struggle so I wanted to make the setting rainy to show how the weather can make it hard to travel especially for people who may not have proper transportation. However I was able to overcome this challenge by experimenting with colors and watching a lot of inspirational artworks.

Which artwork is your favorite and why?

Victoria J. (G12)

  • My favorite from my artworks is the one titled “Sinking”, because I personally like the meaning I put underneath it. Moreover, I also like the concept and the lighting portrayed in the painting.

Chewon Y. (G12)

  • I like both of my artworks I exhibited, but I particularly liked and enjoyed painting the texture of the glass in my artwork “Reflection”.
